บทคัดย่อ (EN): Natural Rubber plantation in industry is very significant in Sri Lanka’s economy. This industry makes export earnings, sustain the livelihood of over thousands of people, supplement thousands of hectares to the forest cover and provide many other socio – economical and ecological benefits. The country is currently moving from traditional to non – traditional areas in the expansion of rubber cultivation. With new prospects of the country, concerted efforts are on at RRISL to give directions for the improvement of productivity levels leading to a sustainable rubber plantation industry. The economically important diseases play a major constraint for achieving potential productivity levels of rubber cultivations. Among them, white root disease has become the most destructive disease in Sri Lanka &many rubber growing countries. This disease has become an important economic factor in the rubber plantation industry during the recent past, as this is the cause for reducing tree stand. Maintenance of the recommended stand per hectare plays a vital role in obtaining higher productivity levels. In the above situation, the rubber growing countries suffer a massive economic set back from the loss of potential revenue. Moreover, the use of labour and chemicals in the land rehabilitation process increases the cost of production. The most popular method of disease control among the growers is the chemical control. The conventional technologies have many health and environmental drawbacks. Therefore, economical & environmental friendly chemical application techniques are essentially important. The present study was aimed to investigate the trunk injection method for introducing chemical formulations into trees. The injectors; [Chemjet Trading (Pvt) Ltd, Australia] contain 20 ml of the solution and have a working pressure of 1 – 1.5 bars facilitating the formulation into the trees through drilled holes. The injection process was tested at Dartonfield Estate, on the Hevea brasiliensis clone RRIC 121. Uptake of the fungicide was slightly higher in deep injected method compared to shallow injection. The two angles tested against the liquid uptake were not significantly different from each other. No interaction observed among the injection angle and the depth of injection on the liquid uptake. More than 70% of the trees had uptaken the entire 20 ml injected volume within 48 hrs of injection. Trunk diameter had no effect on the uptaking process. The results obtained proved the possibility of injecting liquids / chemical solutions into rubber trees. Due to the fact that the injection angle was not significant in relation to uptake rates, injection angel 45◦ to the horizontal could be recommended considering the other practical aspects. Trunk injection requires low volumes of chemicals resulting in reduced cost in chemical applications. Minimum wastage of chemicals could be achieved together with reducing the impact of hazardous chemicals on the environment. Compared to the currently practiced chemical application methods into trees, this application technique has many advantages.
