บทคัดย่อ (EN): The presence of a mother hen could play a role in protecting and improving productive performance in a village chicken flock. The objective of this study was to observe the maternal behaviour of a Thai native hen while taking care of her broods in the village chicken production systems. Observations on maternal behaviour of ten native broody hens were made in Ban Kham village, Khlong Kham sub-district, Yang Talat district, Kalasin province, Thailand. The following behaviours were recorded: exploring, scratching, pecking, motherly vocalisations, preening, resting, vigilance and aggressiveness. Behavioural observations were conducted for 3 days consecutively using continuous sampling for 15 min per hen per day. The frequencies (for events and states) and duration (for states) were computed and expressed as values per hen per 15 min. The time budget (for states) of individual behaviour was expressed as the proportion and percentage of total time performing specific behaviour patterns. The results found that the hen spent higher time in foraging behaviour including exploring (25%), scratching (32%) and pecking (23%), follow me call for 3.1±1.4 times per 15 min and food call for 22.0±5.7 times per 15 min. In addition, the time budget for protection and comfort-maintenance behaviours by vigilance and preening bouts were 13% and 7%, respectively. As well as this, the frequencies of occurrence in 15 min for aggressiveness and predator call were 1.5±0.5 and 0.83 ± 0.4 times, respectively. In conclusion, a Thai native hen aids chicks to 1) discover edible feed, 2) be protected from dangerous things and 3) comfort and maintain well-being by using maternal visual displays and vocalisations.
