บทคัดย่อ (EN): Poor reproductive maturation of the black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is a major problem of the farming industry. The breeding of pond-reared P. monodon is extremely difficult and rarely produces enough larvae with the level of quality required by the industry. Therefore, the shrimp farming relies entirely on wild-caught broodstock and will eventually lead to an overexploitation of the natural population. To avoid overexploitation of the natural populations of P. monodon, several strategies are explored to improve reproductive maturation in captivity for both male and female brooders. Therefore, our research group aims to address the problem of low quality of male broodstocks in captivity.

Previously, we have examined effects of sand polychaetes (Perinereis nuntia) on male reproductive performance. We found that after four weeks of polychaetes feeding to captive male brooders, growth rate, survival rate and sperm performance indicators, such as spermatophore weight, total sperm count, abnormal sperm, and acrosome reaction, were better than those fed with commercial pellet. Therefore, using polychaetes as a reproductive feed for the male shrimp is a very promising start; however, we believe that the effects can be more pronounced by using combination of live feeds.

Therefore, this project proposes to study the effects of different combinations of live feed (polychaetes, squid, and bivalve) on the growth rate, survival rate, and sperm performance of male domesticated brooders. The indicators for sperm performances used in this project will be composed of spermatophore weight, total sperm count, sperm viability (dead/live sperm), abnormal sperm, and abnormality types. The domesticated male broodstocks will be randomly separated into eight experimental groups: shrimp fed with (1) polychaetes, (2) squid, (3) bivalve, (4) polychaetes and squid, (5) polychaetes and bivalve, (6) squid and bivalve, (7) polychaetes, bivalve, and squid, and (8) commercial pellet (control group). All experimental groups will be fed for a month. The spermatophore will be collected in both before feeding (Weeks 0) and after feeding 4 weeks (Week 4) and further assessed sperm performance. Nutritional contents and three essential fatty acids (AA, EPA, and DHA) in each live feed and combination of live feeds will be analyzed.
