บทคัดย่อ (EN): Indonesia's energy supply is highly dependent on fossil fuels. Therefore, a huge potential for renewable energy (RE) will have the chance to play an important role in the energy mix. Considering opportunities for renewable energy utilization, Indonesia has started to use biofuel in automobiles. Ethanol is targeted to have supply 5% of total gasoline consumption for 2006-2010. An analysis of environmental impact and cost from production and utilization mix gasoline with ethanol 10%, so called E10, was done using Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Cost method, and compared with gasoline 100%, by 100 km driving of Toyota 1.6 L functional unit. The results obtained showed that E10 has the potential for reducing the impacts when compared with gasoline for 0.15% for global warming and 5% for abiotic depletion. However, in term of acidification E10 has positive impacts about two times than gasoline and 33% higher in eutrophication. E10 price is lower than gasoline per liter for about Rp 63.4, however when comparing both price based on fuel economy, EI0 more expensive than gasoline for about Rp 9. Putting external cost in a calculation brings a reduction of cost about 4.61% and make E10 price cheaper than gasoline. Replacing coal with biomass in ethanol plant boiler leads to improved overall environmental performance, whilst certain biomass and selling the co products are effective in reducing the cost.
