บทคัดย่อ (EN): The world natural rubber industry faces serious challenges. Both producers and consumers of NR are now in serious business dilemma. As the depressing low rubber prices continue to bite into the earnings of producers, consumers are concerned that global supply may be affected in the long term. Both are confronted with a difficult choice to make in order to survive in the business. For a number of years now, the market has not offered any sign of relief from the low rubber prices. Instead, excruciatingly low margins continue to haunt the income and profit of natural rubber producers. Many reasons have been cited for the depressing prices. Slowing demand arising from the anaemic performance of the global economy is one. Whilst the low crude oil pricing is also negatively impacting on NR prices. As a result, it is no surprise that the motivation to produce has been dented significantly, especially among the smallholders. But stopping production altogether is also not an option for smallholders. For many, natural rubber is their only source of livelihood. Some even resort to increasing production to maintain the needed income to survive. The search for viable solutions to resolve this dilemma has preoccupied the work of researchers and business in recent years. A suggestion to channel the excess stock of NR into some high volume applications has been floated around for some time now. However, this has yet to take off in a big way. One idea proposed concerns using the excess NR in road construction. But the volume for use in bitumen is not high enough to make a difference. Increasing the downstream manufacture of NR based rubber products has also not met with much enthusiasm. At the moment NR is known to be irreplacable in many applications, especially in the big aviation tyres and the latex items. Sufficient volume must be made available to such sectors to maintain NR demand. Any shortfall in supply to such sectors may not be in the long term interest of the producers. There is that risk of being substituted by other elastomers. This is because any unavailability of the material can incentivise new research to look for alternatives. All the above presents a dilemma for the world NR producers. Reducing production and supply can help prop up prices. But in the longer term such move can lead to the risk of losing some market share through substitutable alternatives.
