บทคัดย่อ (EN): Marketing of smallholder rubber differ between sites in Indonesia. The common factor is the involvement of brokers or middle- men at various levels before raw rubber reaches a processing factory often in bigger cities. Depending on accessibility of site and other factors, the middle-men (locally called toke) may exist at village (kampong), sub-district and district levels, and finally a ‘dealer’ at the factory level. The length of this marketing chain determines the efficiency. In case of villages in Jambi (Indonesia), a several layers of middle-men exist that affect how much smallholder farmers get for their rubber at the field level. At the village level, social relationship between farmers and these middle-men is often strong (e.g. provision of loan to farmers; share- tapping in middle –men ’s rubber gardens). The quality of rubber produced by the smallholder farmers in Jambi is considered one of the lowest in the country. Latex is mixed with a lot of contaminants (bark, leaves, branches and soil) and stored in water in order to increase ‘rubber’ weight. Recommended coagulant (formic acid) is rarely used while the use of sulfuric acid further reduces its quality. The low quality of rubber is also due the fact that farmers do not receive a better price for quality product as quantities of good quality rubber could not be treated separated from normal poor quality rubber. Following an earlier assessment of rubber marketing in the province, an attempt was recently made in LubukBeringin, Sangi andLetung villages inBungo District in Jambi to explore whether rubber quality can be raised by improving its marketing system. Initial discussions with farmers and farmer groups on their views on rubber quality and marketing were held. ICRAF facilitated the establishment of farmer groups for collectively taking rubber slabs directly to the factory. Factories were willing to provide a better price if the volume of rubber was sufficient. Farmers received much better price than what they receive from middle-men in the village. With this experience, farmers are getting interested in improving both the rubber quality and marketing system. However, some farmers, preferred to continue their traditional marketing through middle-men mainly because of their of their existing debt with the middle-men and other social factors. Based on this experience, new initiatives are proposed that can benefit both the smallholder farmers and the rubber industry in Jambi
