บทคัดย่อ (EN): Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) is native to Amazonian rain forests where the climate is wet equatorial type featured by a warm, breezy and humid weather. Rubber tree produces the best yield in areas with the climate resembling its center of origin. However, only a few rubber growing regions in the world have the most favorable climate for rubber cultivation. In addition, the strong competition from other crops, urbanization and the growing global consumption of natural rubber led to an expansion of rubber cultivation into marginal or suboptimal areas. In Viet Nam, rubber cultivation from the traditional Southeast region was extended to the suboptimal regions of Central Highlands, Central Coast and Northern Mountains. In this paper, we present an overview of climatic effect on natural rubber yield potential in traditional and non-traditional areas in Viet Nam. A climatic model proposed by Cirad (Gohet et al., 2015) was used to evaluate the climatic suitability for the traditional regions with a long history of rubber cultivation and the new rubber plantation sites that has yet to be harvested in Viet Nam. This model calculates a composite climatic marginality index (CCM Index) using climatic parameters (annual mean temperature (ToC), annual total rainfall (mm), number of dry months per year, number of cold months per year, and annual thermal amplitude) collected a period of fourteen years (from 2001 to 2014). The results were compared with corresponding observation-based estimates. The CCM index offered the basis for a climatic typology of rubber cultivation regions in Viet Nam. The climatic factors that inhibited natural rubber yield potential were identified and quantified, which could be used for rubber planting and latex harvesting systems recommendations. This paper also gives a rough evaluation of the model and determines its strength and weakness when applied to the climatic data of Viet Nam.
