บทคัดย่อ (EN): A high incidence of scion dieback of young budded rubber plants at the first leaf whorl stage in the nursery had been observed especially under hot and dry climatic conditions in Sri Lanka. In order to investigate the causes and remedies for this sudden dieback of young scion during hot and dry weather conditions, experiments were carried out in a commercial rubber nursery where hot and dry weather conditions are prevalent in many parts of the year. Stock plants raised separately in two plots using early germinated high vigor (HV) and late germinated less vigor seedlings (LV) but bud-grafted almost at the same time were selected and were cut-backed. In each of the selected plots, half of the plants were shaded (SH) with 60-65% black shade nets while keeping the rest of the plants open to direct sunlight (NSH). In each sub plot, nearly a half of the plants were re-stacked (R) and kept in the same place while keeping the other half undisturbed (NR). Watering, application of fertilizer and other management practices were as per the recommendations. Percentage scion dieback (SDB) at 13 weeks after cut-back was severe in LV, NSH and R plants (28.3%). Even in NR plants of NSH and LV, 13.6% SDB was recorded. In contrast, SDB was significantly low in HV plants and it ranged from 0.7 to1.7% in all treatments. Studies further revealed that root length density (RLD) was significantly high in HV plants compared to that in LV plants. High incidence of photoinhibition indicated by chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was observed in R, NSH and LV plants. These results indicate that commencement of rubber nurseries with good quality seedlings having high growth vigor (HV) can produce budded plants which are able to withstand unfavorable hot and dry climatic conditions. Furthermore, leaving plants undisturbed after cut-back and shading of plants during hot and dry weather will also facilitate to reduce scion dieback. Therefore, with changes in weather pattern, agricultural practices recommended to mitigate its adverse impacts need to be adopted to minimize eventual economic losses. Key words: high vigor plants, hot and dry climate, low vigor plants, restacking, rubber, scion dieback, shade, young budding plants
