บทคัดย่อ (EN): Climate change and occurrence of extreme weather events are well reported from many parts of India. However, similar studies covering the natural rubber growing regions of the country are minimal. Occurrence of extreme weather events can have devastating and immediate impacts on crops, ecology and livelihood of rubber growers. The present study analysed the occurrence of extreme temperature events in a traditional rubber growing region of India, namely Kottayam district of Kerala in the past 40 years (1970-2010), using R. ClimDex package developed by ETCCDMI (Expert Team on Climate Change Detection Monitoring and Indices), Canada. Temporal variations in trends of occurrence of extreme temperature events were tested with Mann-Kendall trend analysis. The diurnal temperature range (difference between monthly maximum and minimum temperatures) increased from 7.77oC during 1970 – 1974 to 9.15oC during 2006-2010. The monthly mean of daily maximum temperature increased by 0.035oC per year. Frequency of occurrence of hot days (percentage of days when maximum temperature > 90th percentile) increased at a rate of 0.56% per year and the highest temperature recorded in a month showed an increase of 0.038oC per year. The minimum temperature of the coolest night of a month decreased while the frequency of cool nights per year (percentage of night having temperature falling within the lowest 10% observations) showed an increasing trend during the study period. These trends in the occurrence of extreme temperature events at the regional scale may be attributed to the global climate change phenomena or local effects due to urbanization, changes in land use pattern etc. The increasing trend in the occurrence of extreme temperature events may eventually leads to the warming up of the climatic pattern of the study area. It is reported that the productivity of rubber can be affected by increasing warming trend in the traditional rubber growing areas. In regions where rubber is the predominant crop, warming temperature events have the potential to adversely affect the livelihood means of tens of thousands of small rubber growers.
