บทคัดย่อ (EN): In the Philippines, natural rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) production has generated enthusiasm because of the current good price of rubber and its environmental benefits. Considering such benefits, the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) has embarked on a national rubber development program targeting the establishment of one million hectares of rubber plantation by the year 2020. As of 2006, 90,641 hectares of land are planted to rubber, most of which are in Mindanao (BAS, 2006). The DA (2007) reported that the target expansion area by 2010 is 320,000 hectares of land in Mindanao. Since investment capital is the primary factor in planting, much consideration is given to the possibility of planting rubber in the vast non-traditional areas of Luzon and the Visayas islands including the island province of Palawan. These non-traditional areas with potential for rubber cultivation are estimated at around 1.5 to 2 million hectares. Thus, production of quality planting materials is needed in these areas. The propagation of quality rubber seedlings and creating a huge demand for such seedlings are the strategies in achieving the objective of the DA. Attracting entrepreneurs to invest in rubber plantations will increase the demand for budded seedlings, thus will encourage budded seedlings production. In this regard, the DA through the Bureau of Agricultural Research, the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, the Central Luzon Integrated Agricultural Research Center, and the Bureau of Plant Industry, has initiated the gathering and documentation of information and data on rubber seed germination, growth of seedlings, and related parameters. A budwood garden was established in CLIARC, Magalang, Pampanga and seeds were germinated and maintained in the DMMMSU nursery in Bacnotan, La Union and in the BPI nursery located in Diliman, Quezon City. Magalang, Pampanga and Bacnotan, La Union has type 1 climate, while Type 2 climate prevails in Quezon City. Seedlings growth performance were also observed in Tanay, Rizal; Roxas, Isabela; and Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The effort involved transporting budded seedlings from North Cotabato in Mindanao to Magalang, Pampanga; Roxas, Isabela; and Palawan. The seedlings were planted and raised as budwood source, except in Tanay, Rizal where unbudded seedlings were grown. After one year, an 80% survival rate was observed among the budded seedlings. There was no significant difference observed in the growth of the seedlings as compared with those grown in Mindanao, particularly in the North Cotabato Province. On seed germination, a very low rate of germination (20-25%) was observed in the BPI nursery in Quezon City, and in the DMMMSU nursery. In Tanay, Rizal, a higher rate of almost 50% was observed. The average germination rate in Mindanao, particularly in North Cotabato is 70%. The low germination rate was due to the inadequate handling of the seeds. The second phase of the trial consists of adoption of appropriate seed handling techniques and shortening the time of transporting the seeds from the source to the nurseries.
