บทคัดย่อ (EN): Poor stand establishment is one of the major problems in super sweet corn (Zea maysL. saccharata) production due to a rapid loss in seed vigor. In this study, four priming solutions were investigated for improvement of seed germination of fresh- and artificially aged (AA) seeds of two varieties of super sweet corn seed, Hi-brix53 (hybrid) and open pollinated F3 of ATS5 (OP). The seeds were primed for 12 hours either with distilled water (H2O), 0.33% wood vinegar (WV), 0.59% NaCl or 1.12% CaCl2, to explore theirs effect on the improvement of germination, including physiological and biochemical changes. The results showed that percentage of germination was significantly improved in both fresh and AA seeds of both corn varieties after priming, with the WV treatment. The improvement was associated with the reduction of malondialdehyde (MDA) content in fresh hybrid, AA hybrid and fresh OP seeds. In fresh and AA seeds of hybrid variety, the MDA reductions were associated with the increases of activities of antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), which APX was distinguished. However, carbohydrate hydrolysis, determined by invertase and amylase activities, was significantly suppressed in primed fresh hybrid, but not in primed AA seed.In fresh and AA seeds of OP variety, the improvement was not associated with the increases of activities of antioxidant enzymes, but probably involved with carbohydrate hydrolysis.
