บทคัดย่อ (EN): Stimulating Hevea trees using yield stimulants such as ethephon is a common practice in rubber estates for harvesting more latex by extending the duration of latex flow. Wounding rubber trees by conventional tapping will trigger ethylene biosynthesis in the bark tissue. Earlier studies indicated that a single dose of stimulant application triggered stress responses in the tapping panel of Hevea trees, while over-stimulation induces physiological disorders like tapping panel dryness (TPD) (Krishnakumar et al., 2009, 2010). The high ethylene level in the bark tissues of the ethephon treated trees may eventually result in oxidative stress leading to irreversible damage of the laticiferous tissue, ultimately leading to the inhibition of rubber biosynthesis, thereby limiting the crop productivity. Therefore, minimizing stress responses with optimum stimulation methods is very essential to keep the health of rubber trees with sustainable yield. A study has been carried out to assess yield enhancement and magnitude of stress responses in Hevea trees using different stimulation methods as follows. Mature Hevea trees (clone RRII 105) were stimulated in five different treatments viz. (A) 150cm above the bud union, (B) on the bud union, (C) both A and B treatments together, (D) standard stimulation practice and (E) unstimulated control. The trees were observed for a period of one month before and two months after the stimulation for latex yield and stress components were analyzed in each group among the treatments and unstimulated control. Treatment c resulted in maximum yield and minimum stress responses. In this group, the latex yield was significantly higher (88.7 g/t/t) than trees stimulated with the standard method (half spiral, panel application) (60.26 g/t/t) probably due to the increased drainage area impacted by the stimulant. Stress response in the tapping panel was studied by analyzing components like hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxidase, cyanide (CN), β-Cyanoalanine synthase (βCAS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) which have shown variations with treatments. Compared to the standard stimulation method, stress response was minimum in trees stimulated with the modified method C. By adopting this method the direct local effect of ethylene on the tapping panel which is harmful for the tree could be avoided and this is being investigated.
