บทคัดย่อ (EN): Metrolac is a hydrometer used to estimate the dry rubber content (DRC) of natural rubber latex in the field and it has been calibrated to give the DRC directly. In the estimation of the DRC using the metrolac, latex is diluted 3 times and the instrument is inserted in latex. It is allowed to move freely before it comes to rest and then the reading is taken. Although the instrument is calibrated to give DRC directly, it actually measures the density which is influenced by several factors such as the temperature, the level of dilution of latex, adulteration and composition of latex etc. Due to lack of knowledge of the use of the metrolac, the estimation is, sometimes, not done properly thereby causing conflicts between the buyer and the farmer. Manipulation of the metrolac by resorting to various malpractices also causes problems. Althought there are some problems in the estimation of DRC of field latex using the metrolac, it is still the common instrument used in Sri Lanka to estimate the DRC of field latex at he field level. The problems associated with the use of the metrolac, the steps taken by the Rubber Research Institule of Sri Lanka to minimize the problems and the experiences of the author with regard to the ues of the metrolac are discussed in this paper in detail.
