บทคัดย่อ (EN): Effects of heat treatment on physical properties of natural rubies were studied. In this research Vietnamese rubies were chosen. In the experiment, these samples were subjected to heat treatment in flowing oxygen at a rate of 2.0 liter 1 min. The experimental procedure was divided in to three parts. The first part was to determine the change in crystal structure of rubies due to each heat treatment at a particular temperature. It was found that the maximum decrease in the c 1 a ratio of the hexagonal unit cell occurred after the treatment at 1300 'c. The second part was to measure the color of rubies using CIE La*b* index by reflectance spectrometer. All the samples showed the increase in color index a* while their color index b* decreased. This resulted in bluish red in some samples. The lightness index was only slightly changed. It can be therefore concluded that the optimum temperature is 1400 "c. The last part was to monitor the change in ESR signal of paramagnetic ions C? and Fe3+ present in those rubies. They were measured after the heat treatments form 1200 -1600 'C at a step of 100 'c. The increase of Fe3+ was maximum value after the thermal process at 1400 'C while the amount of C? remained more or less unchanged. This meant that some Fez+ ions had changed to Fe3+ and resulted in better (red) color.
