บทคัดย่อ (EN): Rubber agro forestry systems are being implemented in Nigeria by RRIN in partnership with ICRAF and rural communities. This CFC – funded project which commenced in 2009 is appropriate for smallholders and aims at conserving farmers’ prioritized indigenous plants including medicinal plants, improving productivity of Rubber agro forestry by poor farmers, enhancing sustainability of farming systems, diversifying sources of income of farmers and improving farmers’; livelihoods. Over seventy farmers were identified and selected from four traditional rubber growing states (Akwa Ibom, Edo, Delta and Ogun) and one non-traditional rubber growing state (Kaduna). The selected farmers were trained at RRIN Headquarters to empower them. Using improved planting materials, the farmers established rubber – based agro forestry plots in their States. Medicinal trees (Tetrapleura tetraptera ,Dennetia tripetela, Xylopia aethiopica, etc) were introduced at the farm borders and other crops including vegetables were planted as intercrop by the farmers. The old rubber clones were intercropped with shade tolerant medicinal plants (Aframomum melegueta,Piper guineses , Gongronema latifolium etc). Mini – livestock (rabbits, snails, beekeeping etc) will also be introduced under the old rubber plantation. Assessment of performance of rubber and non-rubber components of the systems has been planned to determine tangible benefits from plants and animals (flora and fauna) of the rubber agro forestry. Data will be generated over a 4-year period before conclusive report can be produced. The ex-situ conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the rubber agro forestry will help reduce poverty in Nigeria.
