บทคัดย่อ (EN): Motivation on the development of synthetic rubbers started back in 1920’s due to the shortage supply of natural rubber. With the development of synthetic rubbers, the NR monopoly in the elastomer market was broken Nevertheless, the natural rubber usage in a great number of elastomer products is practically irreplaceable due to its excellence mechanical performance. Furthermore, great effort has been made to overcome the drawbacks of natural rubber technical properties. Epoxidised Natural Rubber (ENR) and Deprotenised Natural Rubber (DPNR) or commercially known as EKOPRENATM and PUREPRENATM, respectively are examples of specialty rubbers. These chemically modified rubbers expand the NR application market as these materials show properties comparable to those of synthetic rubbers. Furthermore, specialty rubbers are produced from a renewable source unlike the synthetic rubber which is derived from non-replenishable petroleum. This suits the global trend towards sustainable development through the usage of ‘green’ materials, Awareness of the benefits and advantages of specialty rubbers is being done extensively through promotion activities around the world to main rubber product manufacturing sector particularly to major tyre manufacturers and retreaders. The eco-friendly and low energy products produced from this specialty rubber improves the carbon life cycle and exerts less stress to the environment. This was shown in the applications of EKOPRENATM in manufacturing tyres with better rolling resistance and good wet grip. This gives significant reduction on the fuel car consumption and positive impacts towards the environment (less carbon dioxide emission). Furthermore, the regulations and performance labelling system also motivates in the interest and usage of this specialty rubber grade.
