บทคัดย่อ (EN): In a recent decade, the treatment of domestic wastewater has been focused onnutrient removal. The significant quantity of nutrient, especially nitrogen accumulates inthe water causing many serious problems which impact on humans and the environment.Eutrophication or algal bloom in natural water is a main problem. Nitrogen removal wasexpected to relief the condition. The objective of this study was to investigate the suitableaquatic weeds to enhance nitrogen removal from domestic wastewater. Five pilot scaleunits, each with 0.6 m in width, 1.8 m in length, and 1.2 m in depth, were constructed atthe Hatyai Municipality Central Wastewater Treatment Plant under realistic conditions.Each unit was planted with water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), water lettuce (Pistiastratiotes), lotus (Nelumbo nucfera), and hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata), respectively.Another unit was a control site without aquatic weed. Wastewater from the secondconstructed wetland of the Hatyai Municipality Central Wastewater Treatment Plant wasintroduced to the systems using peristaltic pumps to maintain a fixed flow rate at HRT of10.5, 5.4 and 1.0 days, respectively. From the nitrogen mass balance, it was found that themajor mechanisms of nitrogen removal in water hyacinth, water lettuce, and lotus unitswere proposed to be denitrification and plant uptake. High pH and temperature in hydrillaand control units could favor ammonia volatilization to the substantial loss of nitrogenfrom the systems. However, there was no significant difference among various plants fornitrogen removal. For domestic wastewater treatment as post treatment, a system withfloating plants such as water hyacinth, water lettuce, and lotus performed the satisfactoryefficient removal for all water quality parameters to meet the requirement of the effluentstandard of Thailand.
