บทคัดย่อ (EN): Mae Taeng watershed plays an important role in the daily lives of human beings as its attributes and functions are composed of prosperous natural resources providing tangible and intangible benefits. Although the area has been under management for a couple of decades, it was subjected to various human induced changes among which land use was prevalent. To considering the impact of land use change, there were temporal assessments of land use/cover. The impact of land use change on runoff has been recognized as an important factor along with the runoff-rainfall ratio. The objectives of this study were: 1) to investigate rainfall and runoff in the Mae Taeng watershed, 2) to examine how land use and land cover has changed in the Mae Taeng watershed and 3) to analyze the relationship between land use change and runoff-rainfall ratio. This study has been carried out by using quantitative methods for data analysis of land use changes from 1989 to 2004, runoff and climatological factors such as rainfall. The study utilized geoinformatics applications for analyzing land use and rainfall factors. The results revealed that annual rainfall in Mae Taeng watershed was within a range of 1000 mm to 1600 mm. While land use assessment revealed forest dominated land declined to 34% from 42%, land use change to orchard was the most common change among other land use types such as paddy fields, field crop, perennial crop, horticultural land, shifting cultivated land, forest, wetland, and community. The results showed that changes from forest to orchard were common and it can be inferred from the results that runoff-rainfall ratio is directly proportional to the forest cover. It was found from the study that the runoff-rainfall ratio depends on land use change during the study period of 1989-2004. Hence, the study recommends that if suitable land use practices are employed along with the land use change it would be feasible to achieve the goals of sustainable land use through efficient water usage
