บทคัดย่อ (EN): The rural agro-forestry sector forms the backbone of the world natural rubber industry with smallholders accounting for approximately 90 percent of global production. Price and latex productivity fluctuations are the two main income risks faced by the growers. Therefore, establishing additional income sources for smallholders, is of critical importance in enhancing their rural livelihoods and combating poverty. Recently, a more proactive measure to diversify income and therefore reduce risk exposure to adverse price fluctuation has been gaining significant research interest - the integration of meliponiculture (stingless bee keeping) in rubber growing areas. The culture of Meliponine bees can be described as an activity in which stingless bees colonies are maintained and propagated to produce honey, pollen cerumen and propolis. The integration is aimed at alleviating the income level and socioeconomic status of the rubber smallholders. Preliminary research and pilot projects have already been carried out, particularly in Malaysia. The main objective of this short communication is to identify key areas of research required to effectively evaluate the potential integration of stingless bees in rubber smallholdings. It suggests to explore the feasibility and viability of stingless bee rearing (meliponiculture) as an additional income stream for rubber smallholders, as well as improve the pollination and fruit set of the rubber trees. Research on the introduction of inter-cropping as an additional food source for the bees as well as a soil amelioration option for the rubber trees is also suggested. Attention will also be paid to identifying the most suitable landscapes for the integration program (palynology), as well as potential marketing channels and certification standards.
