บทคัดย่อ (EN): Background: Group A rotavirus (RVA) is a leading cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children, and is also a major cause of death in young children, especially in developing countries in Africa and Asia. However, older children and adults also can get sick from RVA. In Thailand, the RVA detection rate in hospitalized children with gastroenteritis ranges 28.4 to 44.5%. Interestingly, the hospitalized gastroenteritis with RVA tend to be older children and adults in 2017. In this study, we surveyed the GP type distribution in the hospitalized gastroenteritis cases in Thailand. Materials and Methods: A total of 251 stool specimens were collected from hospitalized gastroenteritis cases between August 2017 and March 2018 in Thailand. The specimens were subjected to conventional RT-PCR to assign their GP types. Results: RVA was detected in 131/251 (52.2%) stool specimens. The GP types of RVAs belonged to G3P[8] (17.1%), G2P[4] (12.7%), G9P[8] (7.6%), G1P[6] (6.4%), G1P[8] (4.0%), G3P[6] (2.0%), G3P[4] (1.2%), and G8P[8] (1.2%). 87.8% of RVA gastroenteritis occurred in the cases aged >5 years old, whereas only 12.2% occurred in aged <5 years old. In this study, the peak of RVA gastroenteritis was found in January and February 2018. Discussion: The RVA prevalence and GP types were studied in the hospitalized gastroenteritis cases in Thailand between August 2017 and March 2018. The RVA detection rate was quite high in adults. G3P[8] was still a predominant genotype, but it is of note that G2P[4], G9P[8], and G1P[6] were detected in a high frequency. The occurrence of RVA gastroenteritis in adults is not common. The precise genome profiles will also be presented by whole genome nucleotide sequence determination.
