บทคัดย่อ (EN): Recent concern for the environment and interest in renewable energy sources has resulted in a growing number of small wind turbine installations in and around Bangkok. But should wind energy be promoted in this area? Previously available wind resource data is for the most part unsuitable for the decision-making process, as most wind measurements are influenced by nearby structures and vegetation, and available wind maps have been generated for a much larger area than just Bangkok itself and have thus not been able to carefully account for the urban environment. This work presents wind maps produced via l-km mesoscale modeling using MM5, with enhanced land surface inputs and urban surface roughness zoning designed specifically for the building morphology of Bangkok. The best wind resource is near the coast, with annual mean wind speeds of up to 4.8 m S-1 at 20 m above ground level (AGL), 5.4 m S-1 at 50 m AGL, 5.6 m S-1 at 80 m AGL, and 5.8 m S-1 at 100 m AGL. Exclusion zones based on natural and cultural criteria were developed using a geographical information system based approach that resulted in 71% (1120 km2) of Bangkok's area remaining for very small wind turbines, 14% (219 km2) for small wind turbines, and 4% (62 km2) for medium to very large wind turbines. An estimate of the wind resource potential over all of Bangkok with careful examination of possible installations in each area shows that a maximum of 3,700 GWh yr-1 could be produced. An estimation of attainable wind resource potential with 10%-developable and 1%-developable potentials of 371 and 37 GWh yr-1 respectively resulted in potential wind energy penetrations ofjust 1% and 0.1% respectively. The results showed that small wind turbines in rural areas and very small wind turbines in low-density urban areas have the greatest wind energy potential in Bangkok, but even in these areas. the wind resource is not considered to be good, or to be marginal at best. Those still desiring to install wind turbines should focus on low-speed wind turbines built outside the urban core and as near to the coastline as possible, or on turbines installed on high rises.
