บทคัดย่อ (EN): Natural rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Mull Arg) comprises an extent of 127,500 ha in Sri Lanka. Further, it has been estimated that over 500,000 people are dependents of this industry. Life span of a rubber tree is about 30 years with 5 to 6 years of immature period, which provides no income to the rubber grower. Moreover, rubber harvesting is confined to the morning hours of the day; hence rubber harvesters are generally considered to be underemployed with a spare time which could be effectively utilized for productivity improvements and thereby to raise their livelihood. Intercropping rubber with economically important crops offers a practical option in this regard. Cut foliage and flower industry in Sri Lanka is booming by fetching both local and international market. Therefore, the present study was aimed to identify suitable species of cut foliage under immature and mature phases of rubber plantations. With both immature and mature rubber, two sets of field experiments were conducted at Kuruwita substation of the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka (RRISL). Under immature rubber, three foliage plants namely Polyscia, Croton and Cane palm and under mature rubber three foliage plants namely Cane palm, Dracaena and Chinese grass were established as mixed and mono systems. Growth and quality parameters for cut foliage were assessed. According to the results, performance of cane palm grown as a mono system under mature rubber and mix system under immature rubber showed better growth and reached harvestable stage at 12 months after planting. However, both croton and polyscia are sow growers, they did not reach to harvestable stage (2.5 ft height) even at 26 months after planting. And also, performance of cane palm, Dracaena and Chinese grass under mature rubber with mono system showed better growth. Therefore, cane palm, Dracaena and Chinese grass grown as a mono system under mature rubber and cane palm mix with croton and polycia under immature rubber, are selected to grow in rubber smallholders.
