บทคัดย่อ (EN): Skim natural rubber latex, containing 3-8% w/w of rubber, is obtained along with the concentrated rubber latex. In generally, the traditional method of recovery of the skim rubber is by coagulation with concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4). However, in this acid coagulation, the acid content of the coagulated rubber reduces its quality and leads to generation of highly acidic effluent that necessitates additional treatment before discharge to the environment in order to avoid pollution. A high-performance coagulation acid for skim latex (GRASS 0) was developed in order to solve many problems in the past caused by the use of H2SO4. The use of GRASS 0 in combination with hydrochloric acid (HCl) could accumulate more rubber from skim latex than H2SO4 approximately 8% w/w. The properties of recovered rubber were better i.e. plasticity retention index, Mooney viscosity and %nitrogen content. The contamination of sulfate ions in wastewater and clogging problem in the wastewater treatment system caused by the residual rubber were dissolved. Moreover, this work also aim to conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study to evaluate the environmental performance of skim rubber production based on the GRASS 0 technology. The results indicate that the environmental performance in terms of acidification potential (AP) and eutrophication potential (EP) of skim rubber process using the GRASS 0 technology was better than the traditional technology. However, the GRASS 0 technology has shown to have higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than the traditional technology. This study reveals possibility and potential for improvement of the skim rubber production to be more environmental friendly.
